DescriptionCraniotomy set by Gardner, Edinburgh, c.mid 19th century.
It consists of: two trephines with steel heads and brass shafts with detachable ebony handles, a skull saw and knife with steel blades and ebony handles, a bone-handled horsehair brush and a doubled-ended scoop/file.
With the onset of sterilisation using steam in around 1890, instruments increasing became all metal as ebony warped and was more difficult to sterilise.
