TitleWax cast of a right humerus, showing a chondroma
DescriptionWax cast of a right humerus, showing a chondroma
From a male aged 45 years the proximal third of whose right humerus was embedded in a tumour which had been progressively increasing in size during six years. Three years ago he had sustained by a fall an oblique fracture of the humeral diaphysis distal to the tumour. The fracture had united naturally and in good position. Thetumour precluded any movement at the shoulder joint but the restriction was obviated by free scapuloclavicular movement. Amputation of the limb along with part of the scapula and clavicle was successfully performed. The tumour after removal weighed 4.5 kgm. (J. Syme. "Contributions to the Pathology and Practice of Surgery” Edinburgh 1848. 108)
The tumour is irregular and nodular and the healed oblique fracture of the humerus is distal to it. The tumour was cartilaginous with a considerable fibrous stroma.
