TitleSyme's hand (Rt) with scalpel
DescriptionCarved marble sculpture of James Syme's right hand holding a scalpel. A handwritten note by Lister dated February 1905 reads thus: 'Representation in marble of Mr Syme's right hand. Dr John Brown induced Mr Syme to allow a plaster cast to be taken, from which the marble effigy was made. Dr Brown, to whom it belonged, gave it to me when I left Edinburgh in 1877. The words upon it "Dextra Magistri," are in his handwriting. J. Lister Feb 1905.'
