DescriptionEtching by Jan Both (c.1615-1652) after a drawing by his brother, Andries Both (c.1612-1641). The two brothers frequently collaborated as painters and etchers and Jan lived with Andries in Rome, Italy, 1638-1641, where he picked up his Italiante style that was so influential on Dutch landscape painting of the time.
From a series, 'The Five Sense.'
This etching portrays a tooth drawer using small extracting forceps on a patient while a crowd watches. The legend below expresses the reactions of the patient who revolts against the operation, twists his arms due to the pain and appeals to his wife and companions for help.
