DescriptionEngraving on paper, 1785, by Franz Anton Maulpersch (1724-96), finished by Jakob Schmuzer (1733-1811) and signed by both.
It shows a finely attired mountebank at a village fair standing on an improvised stage of boards resting on barrels, surrounded by a crowd. He has provided several attractiosn to rivet their attention inclduing a company of strolling players, some of whom are on stage with him. A clown dances on stage while another, holding a string of sausages, climbs a ladder. At the top of the picture is some sort of diploma with seal.
An assistant, clutching the sufferer's head between his knees, interests the crowd by extracting teeth with a key instrument. Another man in the foreground right holds his face in pain.
