Skulls of Malekola tribal chiefs
Object numberHC.Z.5.13
TitleSkulls of Malekola tribal chiefs
DescriptionThree skulls of tribal chiefs of Malekola, New Hebrides. To illustrate the moulding of a skull produced by pressure. In infancy the skull is bound in such a way as to cause the forehead to recede. The temporal and parietal regions are also compressed to prevent bulging, and the skull is made to project behind the occiput so that it overhangs the neck. The tribal custom at one time was almost universal but is now in abeyance. After a chief has been dead a certain time, his skull is dug up, cleaned and, as in the present instance adorned with coconut fibre and earth.
