DescriptionThe outfit was originally presented to Dr Douglas Guthrie by the National Museum of Southern Rhodesia. Originally the material belonged to a witch doctor named Nyamadinya, a native of Senna on the Zambesi, who died at Bulawayo in 1949. He had practised as a herbalist since 1927 but had never been convicted of witchcraft.
The collection includes:
Two human bones (humerus?), three animal bones (vertebrae and humurus?) two bird of prey claws and a mammal finger used for divination
Horn of an eland, a type of antelope, filled with 'medicine'
Partial horn from a Kudu
Belt made of iguana skin
A small gourd with red seed decoration set with gum
Shell used for treating ear troubles
Tortoise shell filled with 'medicine'
Corked gourd filled with oil, possibly used for massage
Zebra tail switch (missing)
Bone comb
Knife
Carved root of unidentified wood
Piece of wood wrapped in a wire
Originally included were a number of bottles containting medicines and paper packets of crushed roots, animal tissue etc but they were heavily infested with insect pests and had to be destroyed.
