Elbow joint with septic arthritis

Object numberGC.4827
TitleElbow joint with septic arthritis
DescriptionElbow joint. Bones of a right, showing changes due to septic arthritis.
Amputated on account of septic infection following a compound fracture of the olecranon process.
The cartilages of encrustation are wholly -destroyed and the subjacent cancellous bone exposed. The proximal fragment of the olecranon has undergone comparatively little change except on its articular surface but there remains no trace of the coronoid process and the head of the radius is distorted from partial absorption. Inflammatory rarefaction has decalcified the lateral supracondylic ridge exposing through irregular openings the interior of the bone.
