TitleDown With Your Dust. No Cure, No Money
Creator William HUMPHREY (Engraver), John Bowles (Publisher)
DescriptionMezzotint on paper by William Humphrey (c.1740-c.1810) after the painting by Francesco Maggiotto (1750-1805), printed by John Bowles, 13 Cornhil, late eighteenth century.
Comparing this print with the painting from which it was after, Humphrey has used considerable artistic license by inserting as the main protagonist Waltho van Claturbank (fl.1730). He is described on a banner at the rear of the platform as 'High German Doctor and Wonder Working Dentisricator.' He is shown in an outdoor booth extracting a mandibular right molar for a man seated on an improvised wooden stage resting on trestles.
