Hip joint with tuberculous arthritis

Object numberGC.172
TitleHip joint with tuberculous arthritis
DescriptionHip joint, an adult left, showing tuberculous arthritis.
The articular and synovial capsules which are thicker than usual have been divided except superiorly and for the greater part removed and the femur has been turned vertically upwards to disarticulate the head. From the head the cartilage of encrustation has been removed by the disease and the cancellous bone is exposed and partly destroyed. The fovea capitas femoris is not recognisable and no trace of the ligamentum teres remains. From the acetabulum the periosteum of its non-articular portion and most of the cartilage sf its articular portion has been destroyed and superiorly the depth of the acetabulum is perforated by an irregular opening which must have communicated with the pelvis minor. Here and there within the acetabulum irregular masses of cartilage of encrustation remain. What is left of the synovial surface is shreddy and irregular
