Object numberGC.6241
TitleTuberculous arthritis of the elbow
DescriptionTuberculous arthritis of the elbow
The preparation is an adult right elbow joint
From an old man who had tuberculous arthritis of the right shoulder and an old traumatic septic ankylosis of the left wrist (2.(9).e.3.) and who died of generalized tuberculosis. The contents of the elbow joint appeared to be unaltered synovia.
The small portions of the synovial capsule which remain show slight thickening and increased vascularization. On the humerus the cartilage of encrustation has been almost entirely removed from the capitulurn leaving a mottled surface around which posteriorly the cartilage is undermined. The margin of the trochlea medially and laterally and in the olecranon fossa is irregularly pitted from destruction of the cartilage of encrustation. The articular surface of the radius corresponding to the capitulum is mottled and its cartilage of encrustation has been destroyed. In the semilunar notch the cartilage of encrustation is becoming marginally removed exposing the subjacent vascular bone.
