DescriptionHip joint. The bones of a right lower extremity with some of the ligaments retained, showing congenital dislocation at the
From a female, soon after birth, in whom the congenital dislocation was unilateral and was accompanied by tapes varus.
Much of the articular capsule has been removed anteriorly and superiorly. There is no defect in the rim of the acetabulum but the superior portion is flattened and broader than usual, and with a similar deformation of this portion of the acetabular labrum accommodates the displaced head of the femur. The neck of the femur seems short and the head is slightly deformed in accordance with its area of contact. The ligamentum teres is correspondingly elongated and ribbon shaped. These deformities suggest a muscular dysplasia which has produced a cephalad displacement with slight flexion of the femur and a muscular dysplasia is further suggested by the varus deformity of the foot and by a posteromedial displacement of the head of the tibia on the diaphysis, as from dysplasic contraction of the sural muscles.
