Limbus from a child's hip joint with congenital dislocation

Object numberGC.14222
TitleLimbus from a child's hip joint with congenital dislocation
DescriptionAn operative specimen from a child suffering from congenital dislocation of the limbus hip joint.
The specimen shows a small, rather flattened, ovoid piece of fibrocartilage, thinner at its free margin and thicker at the other - the attachment to the acetabular ring.
The limbus is formed from the posterosuperior fibrocartilaginous margins of the acetabulum which normally late undergoes ossification due to the pressure of the normally sited femoral head. In congenital dislocation the fibrocartilage shows varying degrees of hyperplasia and flattening. It constitutes an obstruction to the reduction of the head of the femur. Its removal is therefore necessary during the operation for the correction of the deformity. The accompanying diagrams are from an article by E.W. Somerville, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, 1953, 35B, 363 and illustrate varieties of limbus formation,
