Knee joint with tuberculosis

Object numberGC.9486
TitleKnee joint with tuberculosis
DescriptionMedial segment of a sagittal section of a left knee joint, showing tuberculous arthritis.
From an adult.
The synovial stratum of the joint is thickened and on most of its surface nodular and irregular. Just proximal to the patella the articular space is obliterated and proximal to that again the bursa under the quadriceps femoris tendon is distended and has probably been filled with tuberculous pus. Anteriorly the cartilage of encrustation of the femur is partly defective and is replaced by tuberculous granulation tissue. Microscopic examination shows chronic tuberculosis of the synovial stratum with a good deal of secondary infiltration with inflammatory products.
