Knee joint showing tuberculous arthritis

Object numberGC.6969
TitleKnee joint showing tuberculous arthritis
DescriptionKnee joint, adjacent ends of femur and tibia with patella from left, showing tuberculous arthritis.
Excised from a female at 16 years.
A considerable portion of the encrusting cartilage of the anterior part of each femoral condyle has been destroyed, especially on the lateral condyle, leaving an irregular frayed margin bluish in tint and slightly separated from the congested subjacent bone. On the lateral condyle infiltration under the cartilage has surrounded by a bluish band a considerable area of the encrusting cartilage which would doubtless soon have been destroyed. The articular surfaces on the condyles of the tibia have marginally undergone some destruction and are in process of desquamation from the underlying inflamed bone which presents numerous small areas and aggregations or punctiform haemorrhages. The bone at the margins of the femoral and tibial condyles has undergone considerable osteoporosis. The articular surface of the upturned patella shows at its inferior margin a destruction from infiltration by tuberculous tissue and at its superior margin it is frayed out and superficially has undergone removal.
