The surfaces of the bones are fairly normal and the proximal tibio-fibular articulation has not been involved. On section, the cancellous bone around the joint in both the tibia and femur has irregular spaces of considerable size, and the general cancellous architecture is modified and irregular. The ankylosis between the femur and tibia appears over a limited area to be osseous.
