DescriptionEngraving on paper by Mathias Darly (c.1720-1781 or after), published by the artist 5 November 1778. Darly was a London engraver, painter and print-seller in busiiness on the Strand, London.
An obese bewigged dentist, instrument in hand, inspects the teeth of a well-dressed (but crooked toothed) lady. On the wall is an engraving featuring a mouth with very irregular anterior teeth perhaps like that of the subject.
Under the title reads:
'I cure all disorders of the mouth. I draws teeth in a minute, without pain. I makes natural or artificial teeth & have invented a substance that answers the purpose of gums.'
