Rib with multiple myeloma

Object numberGC.7319
TitleRib with multiple myeloma
DescriptionPortions of three ribs, including part of the chest wall, showing a lymphocytic myeloma.
From a woman aged 57 years, who had had gallstones removed by cholecystotomy a few years previously. She was then recorded experiencing a vague illness for four months, which was characterized by attacks of excessively severe pain from pressure on the spinal nerves, especially in the lower limbs. Radiography showed some absorption of the right twelfth rib which was then excised under the impression that it was simply a fracture that had not united. Within a month, nodules appeared in relation to ribs, sternum, left clavicle, right humerus and other bones.
This was a tumour which had grown from one of the ribs and has extended superficially as well as deeply. The superficial portion of the tumour measured 3 cm deep, and underlay and infiltrated the pectoral muscles. The affected portions of the ribs are decalcified and destroyed.
