Atrophy of the bones of the foot

Object numberGC.3235
TitleAtrophy of the bones of the foot
DescriptionAtrophy of the bones of the foot
The preparation is a medial segment of a sagittal section of the right tarsus, with the hallux metatarsal bone, showing rarefaction (reduction in bone density) associated with disuse.
From an adult whose powers of walking had become increasingly defective during some years, owing to an "endosteal sarcoma" (simple giant-cell tumour?) of the fibula, for which the limb was eventually amputated.
The talus and calcaneum are in sagittal section and the lateral extremity of the navicular has also been sawn off. The bones are all more or less decalcified and rarefied and show increased porosity and in places the compact bone has been removed to expose the cancellous bone beneath. No change is observable on the surface of the body of the hallux metatarsal bone.
