DescriptionTibia and fibula, left, with distal portion of the femur, showing disuse aplasia.
From a young adolescent the subject of tuberculous arthritis of the knee with fixation in right-angled flexion with lateral rotation.
The contiguous articular surfaces of the femur and tibia are deprived of cartilages of encrustation and are irregular and porous. To the anterior surface of the lateral condyle of the femur the patella is fixed by osseous ankylosis. The tibia and fibula, though of average length, are slender, light, and smooth and devoid of the ordinary markings of muscular and fascial attachments. Proximally both show remains of the proximal cartilages of conjugation. The lateral half of the head of the tibia has been removed and shows abnormal thinness of the compact bone and delicacy of the cancellous bone. The proximal tibiofibular articulation has not participated in the disease. The neck of the tibia has a posterior concavity acquired during antecedent osteophsathyrosis.
