TitleMandible, acromegalic deformity
DescriptionDry specimen on mount.
Mandible showing acromegalic deformity.
Said to have been brought "from the African Coast" and to be "probably that of a Hoxiari". The mandible is known to have been at one time in the possession of Professor James Syme.
In every constituent part the mandible is enormously enlarged and most of all in the anterior portion of the body. The alveolar process has been to a great extent absorbed and apparently only the stumps of the canines remained and these have since been lost. The mental protuberance projects unduly and the genial tuber¬cles are hypertrophied giving the body of the mandible great thickness at this point. The hypertrophied mandibular base is smooth and rounded. The rami are greatly increased in height, depth and thickness. Each condyle is irregular and much enlarged and its neck thickened* The mandibular notches are increased in depth. The coronoid processes are overgrown, the left seems to have been broken and is less massive than the right which on its anterior aspect presents an oval facet which doubtless articulated with the temporal surface of the right zygomatic bone.
