DescriptionEtching on paper, possibly by Daniel van den Bremden (1586/87-c.1663) after the painting by Adriaen Brouwer (1605/6-1638), who specialised in peasants and tavern scenes.
This etching, from a series of 'The Five Senses' shows a mountebank extracting a tooth from a peasant, whose arms are tied to the back of a chair. Two onlookers turn to each other in anticipation, while another peasant is lead in in the background. A translation of the legend reads:
'Here you observe the celebrated charlatan,
If he pulls out your teeth, you will feel it.'
