Phalanx with osteomyelitis

Object numberGC.6189
TitlePhalanx with osteomyelitis
DescriptionBones of a right middle finger, showing septic changes in the terminal and middle phalanges.
From a female jute-factory-worker aged 20 years who ten months previously had developed a subperiosteal whitlow of the terminal phalanx.
The terminal phalanx is represented by a small discoloured sequestrum. The head of the middle phalanx has been absorbed and the septic infection spreading into the body of the middle phalanx has resulted in the formation of a large oval excavation in the dorsum and a general rarefaction of the rest of the body of the bone.
