TitleClavicle affected by septic osteitis
DescriptionClavicle affected by septic osteitis, an infection of the bone which doesn't involve the bone marrow
This is an adult right clavicle
The clavicle has retained its normal curvature but the body of the bone and its sternal end show much destruction which has resulted in many irregular excavations and perforations arched over by bridges and projections of bone. The anterior border and surface are the parts chiefly involved indicating that the infection has reached the clavicle by extension of a septic laceration or ulceration of the thoracic wall and not from the cervical aspect of the clavicle. The density and absence of rarefaction of the bone in the immediate neighbourhood of the destruction show that the process had long ceased to be acute and ths the suppurating wound of the soft parts had healed. The absence of new bone is explained by the free evacuation of inflammatory products ,through the laceration of the overlying soft parts. From the degree of destruction of the sternal end the sternoclavicular articulation must have been involved, at least on the clavicular side of its meniscus.
