Mandible with hyperostosis

Object numberGC.5882
TitleMandible with hyperostosis
DescriptionDry specimen.
Posterior portion of an adult left half mandible, showing hyperostosis.
The 1st and 2nd molar teeth are healthy and in situ. The lingual surface anterior to the mandibular foramen and mylohyoid groove is almost normal but appears less dense than usual. Posterior to the mylohyoid groove the angle and ramus are increased in bulk by transformation of the compact bone into light porous cancellous-looking bone with numerous punctures and little excavations on its surface. These changes extend to the neck of the condyle. A simile and more extensive change is present an the facial surface, the swelling being greater and extending almost to the mental foramen anteriorly and to the apex of the coronoid process superiorly.
The hyperostosis forms a nodule on the inferior border of the mandible opposite the 2nd molar tooth. A vertical segment has been removed from the ramus and shows the bone of a loose but close texture with inferiorly some irregular capitation. The cause of the osteodystrophy is probably a chronic progressive subacute inflammatory periostitis.
