TitleTibiae and fibulae showing changes due to bilateral acute septic osteomyelitis.
DescriptionTibiae and fibulae showing changes due to bilateral acute septic osteomyelitis.
From a female aged 16 years in whom the illness was mistaken for "acute rheumatic fever" and she had no surgical treatment until the subperiosteal abscess was incised the day before her death from septicaemia.
The affection has commenced at the distal metaphysis on the right tibia and has involved the ankle joint, and at the proximal metaphysis on the left tibia where there is a large irregular sequestrum of the medial surface. The right fibula has become affected distally. The immunity of the left fibula forms a striking contrast.
