TitleTibia showing tuberculous osteomyelitis, which has led to reaction on the fibula
DescriptionTibia showing tuberculous osteomyelitis, which has led to reaction on the fibula
The preparation is the posterior half of a coronal section of an adult left tibia, with the fibula
The distal third of the tibia is swollen and its surface irregular and dotted with innumerable minute pores indicating great vascular activity of the periosteum. On the medial surface about the centre of this swollen area a trephine disc has been partially removed some considerable time before amputation for the edge of the opening is smooth and the margin is surrounded by a little raised collar of bone.
On section deep to the trephine area is a small abscess cavity 13 mm. in vertical depth excavated from a mass of cancellous bone which for 70 mm. obliterates the marrow cavity. This new cancellous bone is of fine mesh and in its neighbourhood the cancellous bone deep to the cortex forms masses or fairly dense compact bone.
The proximal two-thirds or the tibia are normal and distally the marrow cavity is represented by an oval space 55 mm. in vertical depth.
The surface of the middle two-fourths of the fibula anteriorly and medially is rough and irregular from the periosteal activity and subperiosteal effusion brought about by the proximity of the inflammatory condition of the tibia
