TitleTibia and fibula showing tuberculous osteomyelitis
DescriptionTibia and fibula, distal portions of a left, showing changes due to mixed tuberculous and septic affection.
From an adult in whom the limb was amputated for extensive disease of the ankle joint.
The articular surface of the tibia is destroyed and the distal portion of the diaphysis has been expanded and irregularly destroyed. It has undergone much rarefaction, decalcification and irregular ulceration. Proximally the diaphysis is normal. The fibula. has only shared in the disease to the extent of subperiosteal effusion in the parts nearest the inflammatory disturbances with irregular osteophytic growth along its adjacent surfaces and borders. Though the disease has started as a tuberculous arthritis the ultimate changes in the tibia have been predominantly septic.
