Tibia and fibula showing a comminuted fracture.

Object numberGC.175
TitleTibia and fibula showing a comminuted fracture.
DescriptionTibia and fibula, proximal portion of an adult right, showing a comminuted fracture.
From the level of the middle of the tibial tuberosity an oblique fracture passes from the lateral surface of the tibia distally and medially to the medial border, whence a fissure passes distally along the posterior surface of the tibia and proximally along the popliteal line and there is comminution of the surface of the tibia covered by the popliteus muscle, the fragments being displaced into the cancellous bone. Decalcification and rarefaction have produced some destruction of the margins of the tibial condyles and of the head of the fibula. This rarefaction is a slight inflammatory reaction in the immediate neighbourhood of parts of the fracture and indicates that the individual survived the injury some three or four weeks.
Fracture of the upper end of the tibia, associated with a fracture of the lateral condyle of the tibia. This is depressed downwards.
