Object numberGC.2068
TitleSimple fracture of the femur in the process of reunion
DescriptionSimple fracture of the femur in the process of reunion
The fracture appears to be about 10 days old, at the stage when the soft cartilaginous callus, which bridges to the area of broken bone during the healing process, is beginning to ossify and form new bone
The preparation is the medial half of a sagittal section of the distal portion of an adult right femur
The fracture has passed obliquely distally and posteriorly about the junction of the middle with the distal third of the diaphysis. The distal fragment has been displaced anteriorly and the fragments override to the extent of 75 mm). Between the fragments lies provisional callus in an early stage of calcification and which superficially forms an irregular lumpy mass along the line of the fracture.
The white discoloration of the bone marrow is due to the method of preparation.
