TitleMandible with fracture
DescriptionThe body and portion of the right ramus from a compound fracture of the mandible. From a male farm-labourer aged 19 years who while ploughing in Australia was overthrown by his bullocks taking fright, fell in front of his plough and, the coulter entering below the mandible, he was dragged a distance of fully 20 yards. A lacerated wound extended from the right mastoid process to the left angle of the mandible where it was joined by a lacera¬tion from the left labial commissure. The mandible was fractured and the anterior portion, avulsed, remained attached only to the chin from which it was easily removed. The tongue was not damaged but during the first few days he had difficulty in deglutition. Six weeks later, though with right facial paralysis, he had made a good recovery and was known to be well two years later.
The fracture has occurred horizontally through the right ramus just distal to the mandibular notch and on the left side obliquely through the body of the mandible posterior to the left third molar tooth.
