TitleGangrene of the foot and leg
DescriptionGangrene of the foot and leg, caused by thrombosis
The preparation is the posterior part of a left foot with the major portion of the leg, partly dissected
From a female aged 68 years who had been in failing health during a year. Four months before admission to hospital she had sudden severe pain in the left foot and distal half of the leg and three days later the foot was cold, the pain had increased, and the parts became discoloured. The pain gradually subsided. The leg was removed by disarticulation through the knee and a good stump resulted. During convalescence she had thrombosis of the subcutaneous veins of the opposite limb with only temporary discomfort.
The foot and leg show patchy discoloration limited proximally by an irregular line of demarcation which does not extend beyond the middle of the leg. The anterior and posterior tibial arteries and the peronaeal artery are slightly atheromatous and blocked with blood-clot.
