Left leg showing dry gangrene
Object numberGC.3167
TitleLeft leg showing dry gangrene
DescriptionLeft leg showing dry gangrene. Dry gangrene is death of tissue due to inadequate blood supply, usually caused by arteriosclerosis, where the blood vessels are narrowed and occluded by fatty buildup.
This leg comes from a female aged 78 years in whom dry gangrene followed signs of arterial obstruction. The limb separated spontaneously and the stump healed after extrusion of a small sequestrum. She was able thereafter to get about with crutches during the eighteen months which preceded her death from "apoplexy" - a cerebral haemorrhage (stroke).
The soft tissues of the foot and distal part of the leg are dry, shrunken, and discoloured, and proximally terminate in an irregular margin closely adherent to the tibia and fibula. The tibial separation has been oblique at the expense of the medial surface, and of the fibula almost transverse.
