TitleCicatrix containing heterotopic bone from a coeliotomy
DescriptionWound. Cicatrix containing heterotopic bone from a coeliotomy
From a male miner aged 31 years in whom eighteen months previously a period of gastric discomfort culminated in excessive abdominal pain. A left paramesial epigastric coeliotomy disclosed “signs of acute pancreatitis” and a large ulcer on the posterior wail of the stomach and the affected area was “treated by drainage.” Six months later on account of gastric symptoms the wound was re-opened and gastrojejunostomy performed. After the lapse of a month an attack of vomiting drew attention to a hardness in the cicatrix which was excised and found to contain bone. Nine months later the cicatrix was again found to contain bone (31.c.6.)
The excised cicatrix forms an elongated mass of fibrous tissue in which contained’ heterotopic bone forms at its deeper margin a sickle-shaped border probably the site of the drainage tube at the first operation. On microscopic examination the cicatricial tissue contains remains of muscle bundles as well as well-formed bone with regular haversian systems. The bone is continuous with and surrounded by fibrous tissue. Some foreign-body giant-cells are observed around cholesterin crystals.
