DescriptionHippotamus ivory apple scoop. Nineteenth century.
The marrow has been hollowed out and the natural curve of the bone used as a spoon to scrape off portions of apple where dentures could not be afforded due to their expense. This example unscrews but does not fit inside the handle, increasing portability.
Object is smooth throughout, characteristic of ivory. Has some decorative ribbing throughout.
