TitleLeft lung with oedema
DescriptionLung, portion of a vertical section of a left showing changes due to the inhalation of dichlorethyl sulphide.
From a soldier who was "gassed" in France with "shell gas" on 7th June 1917, and who died sixty hours later. On admission to the hospital five and a half hours after the inhalation he showed neither distress nor cyanosis. On the following day he became distinctly cyanosed and this increased till death. His haemoglobin rose from 98 on admission to 108 before death. On post mortem examination a vast number of small haemorrhages were found scattered through the white matter of the brain and several were found in the one retina which was examined.
The lung shows extensive general consolidation from inflammatory exudate into the pulmonary alveoli.
