Arch of aorta showing atheroma

Object numberGC.240
TitleArch of aorta showing atheroma
DescriptionArch of aorta showing atheroma and a small aneurysm
The aortic arch has been everted, to show an extreme development of the tuberculation of the inner surface from atheroma. There is practically no calcareous deposit. The walls of the vessel are thickened particularly in the concavity of the arch and there a small pea-sized aneurysm has formed. Close to the aneurysm the aortic wall measures 5.5 mm. in thickness. The aneurysm forms a diverticulum into the wall, the sides being formed by thickened intima and the floor composed of tunica adventitia covered by a thin layer of unorganized thrombus.
