DescriptionBronze medal. Obverse: depicting side profile of Otto Ulmgren. Underneath shoulder is written "TORE STRINDBERG". Around the portrait is engraved Otto Ulmgren.1924. On the reverse: two laurel wreaths intertwined around a staff with a snake, a dental forcept and a dental mirror. At the base of the staff are the initials "T. S." and above is the inscription "ÆTATIS SVÆ LXXX" meaning "Of Advanced Age 80". The medal was struck to celebrate the 80th birthday (12 Dec. 1924) of Professor Otto Ulmgren (1844-1932). After having studied in Vienna, Breslau, and Berlin, he graduated M.D. at Uppsala University in 1877. The subject of his thesis was a history of dentistry. He was the first professor of dental surgery at the Dental School, Stockholm, and retired in 1911. A very active member of professional societies in North European countries, he enriched dental literature by many outstanding contributions.
