TitleFinger, showing partial gangrene
DescriptionFinger, showing partial gangrene.
From a female aged 34 years who four months previously had had the side of the finger scratched by a cat. No dressing or antiseptic was applied but gradually the finger from the tip became stiff, cold, and useless. Six weeks before amputation the finger was cold and yellow and an incision was made into what appeared to be a blister though no fluid was evacuated. A month later the finger had become more dead and was cold and white. She refused amputation until a fortnight had elapsed by which time the whole finger was cold, yellowish-grey in colour, hard, and dry. The finger was amputated through the middle of its metacarpal bone.
The finger is stiff and the terminal and middle phalanges are dry, hard, and the skin shrunken into longitudinal folds. The nail is discoloured a greyish purple. On the dorsum of the phalanges the epidermis is cracked and from the proximal phalanx has been mostly removed, exposing a mottled discoloured surface.
