DescriptionWet specimen in a glass.
Subcutaneous chondrofibroma from a finger.
A male aged 78 years noticed 15 years ago a nodule, like a corn on the palmar aspect of the distal interphalangeal joint of the left index finger. The nodule slowly and steadily increased in size. He attributed. it to his work which for many years entailed tying up packages with string. Recently the skin over the tumour became painful and broke down with the formation of a small ulcer.
On examination, the tumour was stony hard, irregular in contour, mobile on the deeper structures and. covered. by skin which was thinned and at one part adherent and ulcerated. Radiograms showed the tumour to be very opaque and not continuous with the underlying bone. The tumour, with a fusiform area of skin, was easily removed. and no attachment to the bone or tendon sheath could be detected.
