Hand with gangrene

TitleHand with gangrene
DescriptionHand with gangrene
The preparation is the hand with the left forearm and elbow joint. Gangrene is the death of tissue caused by lack of blood flow.
From a female aged 79 years in whom an injury to the left forearm by falling out of bed three weeks before death was followed by devitalization of the hand, with shrinking and flexion of the fingers and moist gangrene of the forearm. The arteries of the limb were atheromatous and the heart-muscle fatty.
The fingers are dry, and flexed at their interphalangeal articulations. There is desquamation (skin peeling) of the forearm and a large slough of cast-off skin on the back of the hand and another on the back of the forearm, each partly defined by a line of demarcation. Partial dissection shows the brachial artery narrow, and the lumen of the ulnar artery obliterated by blood clot. Within the radial artery the blood clot is more extensive.
