DescriptionPair of bamboo shoes made for Jack Ennis whilst a POW in Singapore 1942-1945. The shoes are made with bamboo, nails and canvas straps.
Dr Jack Ennis (1911-2007) was a doctor, specialising in Pathology and joined the Indian Medical Service in 1938. Posted to Malaya in 1939 he ran the Command Laboratory in Singapore and then a mobile Bacteriology Laboratory. From 1942 until 1945 he was held as a Prisoner of War by the Japanese in Singapore. His collection of POW belongings was donated to the museum by his family and a large archive containing diaries and medical notes to the RCSEd Archives. The book 'Doctor Behind the Wire' was written by his daughter Jackie Sutherland based on Captain Ennis diaries during his time as a POW.
