TitleThe Wheaton-Pavlik Harness
CreatorWheaton Brace Company
DescriptionThe Wheaton-Pavlik Harness is used to treat hip dysplasia or Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). DDH is a spectrum of disease ranging from minor dysplasia to irreducible dislocation. The Pavlik harness is used to treat early instability of the hip joint (the company make the device for sizes up to 9 months). It works by holding the hips in a position of controlled flexion and abduction. Unlike a cast, the harness does not rigidly immobilize the hips, but allows movement in a controlled manner. This allows the head of the femur to deeply mold the acetabulum, stabilizing the hip. The harness allows some movement in the legs, directing the hip joint into a position where it can develop more normally.
