A post-mortem specimen from a male aged 59 years, who died of congestive heart failure. There was generalised oedema, pleural effusion, several infarcts in the lungs and hypertrophy of the left side of the heart. The aortic valve was bicuspid, the two cusps being of equal size, thickened. and calcified and giving rise to stenosis and incompetence. Venous congestion of the spleen and kidneys was present.
There is extensive recent ante-mortem thrombosis of the veins of the prostatic plexus. The prostate appears normal.
