DescriptionPainting showing giant-cell tumour in head of tibia. These are a relatively uncommon type of bone tumour, which are usually benign. Here the tumour followed a malunited fracture, and required amputation.
From a miner aged 36 years, who fourteen months previously received a blow on the leg from a falling stone which incapacitated him for work during a few days and caused him considerable pain but no other discomfort. Shortly afterwards a swelling appeared about the head of the tibia and was incised five months later but no abscess was found and the swelling gradually increased. He had lost weight during four or five months. On admission to hospital there was considerable swelling of the head of the tibia, which was tender to touch, soft and yielding, and with a crackling sensation on pressure. Disarticulation was performed through the knee joint and he made a good recovery.
