TitleDevelopmental abnormality: ectopia vesicae with an epispadias
DescriptionFoetus, Distal half of the trunk of a six-days old male, Showing anteriorly an ectopia vesicae with an epispadias.
The deficiency in the anterior abdominal wall extends up to and includes the umbilicus. A dried portion of the cord is still attached. The scrotum is well formed and contains the testes. Immediately above it lies the flattened glans penis with a fraenum and partial prepuce. Between this and the umbilicus bulges the congested mucous surface of the bladder. The kidneys, especially the left, are lobulated, and the right ureter somewhat dilated. There is a small but functional anus which is flush with the skin surface. Posteriorly there is a meningomyelocele at the lumbosacral junction, and immediately caudad to this tumour rises an irregular mucous-looking structure 20 mm. broad at its base and about 80 mm. in length. It is flattened anteroposteriorly, and at its commencement is rugose. Near the centre of its right lateral border is an irregular area of skin with several long hairs. Microscopically different parts of this structure show cartilage, bone with periosteum, true skin, gland elements, unstriped muscle, intestinal wall, and other tissues characteristic of a teratoma
