Parosteal osteosarcoma

Object numberGCX.169
TitleParosteal osteosarcoma
DescriptionFemale age 28 years. This patient first presented with a painless swelling overlying her right tibia, of a year's duration. An initial biopsy did not suggest malignancy. A year later it had increased in size, and the tumour was locally removed. A year later there was a recurrence and a below knee amputation was carried out. Three years later further recurrence was noted at the site of amputation and this slowly increased in size of the succeeding two years. Finally, a mid-thigh amputation was performed. The subsequent fate of this patient is not known. Histology of the amputation specimens confirmed the diagnosis.
X-rays show the very tyupical changes of this tumour. It is applied to the surface of the bone and the tumour is characterised by the formation of dense bone with fairly well organised trabecular pattern. Radiologically as well as histologically the differential diagnosis must include myositis ossificans with which this tumour is often confused. The sequence of events illustrated in these x-rays graphically demonstrate the slow growth and low aggressiveness of this tumour.
