Tibia - fibrous cortical defect

Object numberGCX.164
TitleTibia - fibrous cortical defect
DescriptionMale age 17 years. This lesion was symptomless and was an incidental finding on an x-ray taken in connection with an ankle injury. No biopsy was carried out and the diagnosis is therefore a presumptive one based upon the x-ray appearances only. The x-ray shows sharply defined defect in the metaphyseal cortex of the tibia with a thin shell of overlying bone. These lesions are extremely common during the growing period and the majority of them appear to heal spontaneously. The x-ray appearances are so characteristic that the diagnosis can usually be confidently made on x-ray alone and biopsy is not indicated.
