Creator Robert Wilson (1880-1940) Matthews (Artist)
DescriptionLine drawing of a skull showing deformity of the manbdible due to temporomandibular ankylosis. From a male aged 40 years who died of pneumonia. The aetiology of the bilateral arthritis was not known but the deformity had existed for many years. The infection of the joints may have been through the petro tympanic fissure from the biltaeral otitis media or may have followed paratitis for in front of each mastoid were several cicatrices and the paratid glands were degnereated and fatty. The maxillarty cenbtral incisors project 5mm, in front of the cutting edge of the manidibular incisors. The ramus is very short and ankylosed to the temporal. The mandibular angle is obliterated and the long axis of the ramus corrsponds with that of the mandibular body. A vertical section has been made through the joint and the lateral segment swung forward on a pivot to show the completeness of the ankylosis.
