DescriptionSurgical amputation case made by Hilliard, Glasgow. This is a full intact kit with all original instruments, including four amputation knives, bone saw, bone shears, 2 suturing needles, tweezers and tourniquet.
Made and supplied by Harvey Hilliard. A small compartment lid inside the case holds the instrument makers stamp: 'Harvey Hilliard, Manufacturer to the Royal Army and Navy in Scotland.
This surgical kit was presented to William Donald (1808-1878) Esquire Surgeon in 1840. A bronze plaque on the front of the case reads 'Presented to William Donald Esquire Surgeon on his leaving Bamff by a few of his friends as a small token of their respect for his professional attainments and personal worth, 21 May 1840'.
